Well, I guess that would be playing computer. I am sure most of us love playing computer games but it is always very disturbing when you can’t play the way you want it to be. For example, you are unable to blast the game volume as you might disturb your other family members. Therefore the solution to this problem is to play computer games alone, and that I something that I would definitely enjoy. Imagine all the peace you can get at home doing the stuff you enjoy at home such as computer gaming. Lately I have been playing this computer game Gunz: The Duel on my laptop. It’s a third person shooter that requires skill and ability to be able to totally comprehend and master the game. It’s a very unique game with medium graphics though but it has a huge player network playing the game. And if you are improving, the game becomes very addictive that u would not want miss. Best is that there is no one to be there to disturb you when you are at a critical stage and then you are able to 100% concentrate on the game. This a moment I enjoyed a lot as I am able to put mine mind at ease and to play brilliantly and without error. Just imagining when you are at a crucial moment and then someone called your name out, you would be very pissed off at the person as he disturbs your train of thoughts and skills. However no matter how irritating it can be, you should always place family matters in front and not the game so always without fail I would quit the game and help or listen to my parents out.
During the school holidays, our school concert band had our 45th anniversary that takes place every year. The best part was that I was involved in it and it took place in the school’s auditorium. It was one of the most spectacular performances I ever seen especially when I was part of it. This special event marks the birthday of the band and on when it was formed. Therefor being part of it, enlightens be with more ideas so that I will we be able to improve the well-being of the band as a whole. Our school then put up signs all over the school so that people will notice us and to see us perform. The auditorium was packed with people right before the bands’ performance started and we were very delighted to deliver beautiful and colourful music to our audience. The school auditorium is an enclosed area therefore causing our music to resonate resulting in a robust tone and sound.
It was me again and I play the French-horn sitting almost in the middle right in front of the conductor. Although my playing standards at that time were not so good, and I had difficulty playing pieces like Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s pretty tough and challenging but with perseverance and practice, I improved greatly. If there anybody I should thank I guess it the school who gave us the chance to let us perform in the auditorium and I think it is a very delightful thing. I sincerely would like thanks the school to let us borrow the auditorium to hold our very grand anniversary.
As that special incident happened during the holidays, I guess I would have to introduce a little bit about my holidays during the December period from 1st December to 9th December. My family and I went to Japan, Hokkaido during the holidays and we had a lot of fun. During our holiday timespan, our tour guide had briefly told us what we would most probably be doing during our holiday. Well, I guess it would be eating fresh seafood and savour the unique and vast culture of Japan, that I myself for once am ever interested in.
Also during our holiday we have seen snow on the grounds on the road and even on cars windows. Because of the fact that almost every day our family member comes back at different timing of the day, we hardly ever talk or interact with each other except for the time when we had dinner. Therefore, we have decided that we shall spend the holiday time to bond with each other and have fun together as a family. We visited the tourist attractions like the “Hell Valley” it’s actually about many hot, steaming and sulphuric volcanoes erupting sulphur gases into the atmosphere. It was a really unique sight and my family and I enjoyed ourselves.
The special moment is that there was a time when it was snowing heavily and my family and I rushed outside in our thick winter coats and we had a real quick snowball fight, it all stopped when we accidentally hit a Japanese man, he was really humorous he himself getting smashed by a snow ball in his face he smile then speak in some Japanese tone. We were afraid he was angry and we all stood in a single file, faced him and then bowed down deeply to him and said “thank you” in Japanese. We didn’t know what was “sorry” in Japanese so we just blurted out any word that we knew. After he left we all smiled together and let out a huge laughter normally at home we would never be able to do that but in japan we were therefore we all enjoyed that moment the best. It was really enjoyable. That was one special moment I guess.
I presume that anyone involved in the performing art CCA category will definitely heard of this biannually competition, Singapore Youth Festival, aka SYF. And yes it’s a usual Friday again, and we were going to continue our work on the band’s choice piece, El Camino Real. A brief introduction on the piece is that it is composed by Alfred Reed and it’s about a Latin fantasy. I then proceeded to take out the piece and I attempted playing it on my French horn. For me it was a pretty hard piece with many high notes, slurring, tonguing, ascent, dynamic in music, it was a really difficult piece for me. The main problem I have is the high notes as it very difficult to play them on the French horn, u will need a lot of air and a powerful diaphragm to play and sustain the notes.
Especially, at the high tempo it is going it was really difficult to pitch and to be able to sustain the high notes. So guess the problem over here is the high notes I guess. And slowly my helpful seniors noticed my problem and they guided me to use more air and breathe in deeper so that I would be able to hit and pitch the high notes accurately. After always being reminded, I slowly saw some improvement in my playing standard and was feeling pretty accomplished with myself.
After this fruitful incident I finally grasped the technique into play the high notes on the French horn and I was feeling very happy. From this incident onwards, I learnt that with proper intelligence and perseverance, will I then be able to solve any problem.
“Finally a time to lay back and relax for the weekends,” I exclaimed as band practice for that day had finally ended, I was soon going to enjoy myself. It’s a Friday, a normal school day and we had band practice in school till around 8pm. I headed for the bus stop nearest to my school and boarded the Bus 31. When I alighted from the bus stop right below my house, to my amazement, I was surprised to see my “introvert” neighbour loitering around the void deck. And I am dead serious about it; all my other neighbours believed that he is a person who closes all doors to the outside world. He never talks or mentions anything about himself. It’s just too unusual to see him loitering around our neighbourhood.
Even during festival like Lunar New Year and even Moon Cake Festival, he always fails to appear at block gathering and he has been labelled by us as an introvert. And when we meet him in the lift we will became very cold towards him like how he did to us. Most of the time, we would help our other neighbour press the lift button and hold the lift for them while we wait patiently for them, but when we see him approaching, we would hurriedly close the lift door and we would ignore him and when the reach our designated floor we would all heave a sigh of relieved that we did not encountered him.
But what was so unusual was not just because he has left his house in the middle of the night but was what that followed next. As I was about to run up to him and question him he saw an old lady walking past him. He, who is known as Mr Khoo , noticed that the old lady, in the middle of the night, was carrying a lot of plastic bags and many paper bags, he went up and offered her his help. The old lady refused at first but because Mr Khoo insisted, she gave in and he helped the old lady carry her groceries right to her house downstairs, of course I followed. After that happened I told him that he was very kind and helpful but why did he not interact like that with his other neighbours? He then explained that he is a detective and cannot reveal his information that easily to outsiders. He wanted to make friends but because we always misunderstand him and ignored him, he did not have the chance.
From this little incident, I learned that not many people are as simple as they look and we should never judge a book by its cover.
